In the 50s, NASCAR ruled. Whilst drag racing across the USA was still in its infancy, NASCAR was already pushing the boundaries of the automobile and creating its own stars. Among them, Edward ‘Fireball’ Roberts, born in Florida in 1929. Roberts earned his ‘Fireball’ nickname from a brief career as a baseball pitcher, but racing was his real love and he quickly gained a reputation for his hard driving style. He was arguably NASCAR's first superstar. A two-time winner of the Southern 500 at Darlington, and the 1962 Daytona 500 winner, Roberts is known as one of the greatest drivers to never win a title. Ironically he died in a fiery crash in 1964, but his death did lead to the development of safety systems like fire-resistant uniforms and explosion-resistant fuel cells. Roberts was recently inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

This detailed 1:18 scale model is a tribute to the 1957 Chevrolet that Roberts drove to win the 1958 Southern 500. Featuring detailed signwriting including Robert’s signature #22 race numbers, this Chevrolet two door post sedan runs period authentic race equipment like the Paul McDuffie-prepared fuel injected 283 V8, six stud painted steel wheels, lap seat belts and the right hand side support on the front bench seat, common at a time when specialised racing seats hadn’t even been considered. The details continue with moveable suspension and steering, opening hood and doors, and once you remove the elastic hold down strap, opening trunk lid to reveal your sequential model number. One of just 648 to be made, the ‘Fireball’ Roberts is a fine addition to the collection of any auto racing or Chevrolet enthusiast.
